The herbal medicine clinic and dispensary are open Monday to Thursday for you to consult our Medical Herbalist or to order your herbal medicine prescriptions. We also offer food sensitivity testing.
Having been in busy full time practice since 1996 I have had three decades of active hands on experience to observe patterns of "disease", to take a deep dive into studying various pathologies and to hone my diagnostic skills. I do this while keeping an eye on the latest medical and herbal based research to fully inform my clinical decisions.
During this time I have built a toolkit of favourite herbs that I know consistently deliver effective results. I have studied on numerous nutritional CPD seminars. Undertaken training in safely prescribing medicinal mushrooms. And I have listened to lots of different life stories.
Nothing you tell me will shock me.
I have been a Medical Herbalist for a long time and worked with thousands of clients. I often joke that I have written to the moon and back!
In November 1990 I started what has been and still is a long and fulfilling career in herbal medicine. I was blessed back then with the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship style training with Dee Atkinson at Napiers Herbalists in Edinburgh. This involved formal studies with The School of Phytotherapy in Sussex.
After successfully passing all my written exams and completing 500 hours of clinical training I was invited to take my final clinical exam in 1996. Demonstrating exemplary medical knowledge and a thorough understanding of herbal medicine I was then able to apply to the National Institute of Medical Herbalists for full professional membership.
This enabled me to take the next step and I joined the professional team at Napiers Herbalists, where I consulted as a Medical Herbalist. This culminated in me running their specialist Herbal Skin Clinic until 2006. During this period I also worked in clinics in West Lothian, Perthshire and Kirkcaldy.
In 2006, with our 2 year old daughter and two cats, my husband and I moved to Fife to be close to family and to live a more rural lifestyle. At this point I focused solely from working within the Kingdom and gave up my city practice. I took over the reins of Health Food and More in Kirkcaldy in 2007 and have been the lead Medical Herbalist in this practice since.
Recently, born from a desire to work in a gentler way as I move through my middle years, I made the difficult decision to let Health Food and More go and close the doors to the shop on St Clair Street. It has been a mixed blessing over the years running a shop and dispensary, whilst also running a busy practice. Lots of balls to juggle and plates to spin!
In November 2023 we completed the build of a large garden room here at home in Milton of Balgonie. This is where I will be located from now on. The idea being that I can focus on what I really love, working as a Medical Herbalist.
So what is my offering to you?
I offer experience. Not just with prescribing herbs, but with life in general. I like to think this makes me empathetic and able to support in a non judgemental way. I am a good listener, but not a trained counsellor or psychologist. Sometimes sharing a story helps unburden a little and it's enough in itself.
I would describe myself as a general herbal practitioner. I see lots of skin problems, immune imbalances, gut issues and hormonal issues. There are very few medical conditions that I haven't come across. One of my skills is that I am good at unpacking all the symptoms and joining the dots. Getting to the underlying constitutional imbalances. The root cause.
I am well versed in the medical sciences and know when to seek further investigation and orthodox intervention. I will help you dialogue with your GP so that you get on the right pathway. I also have a good understanding of prescription medicines and know how to safely work alongside them.
In addition I have a good working toolkit and I am not afraid to prescribe robust herbal treatments to get the results we need.
I see people who mainstream medicine doesn't accommodate well. Tired all the time. ADHD/ADD. Hypermobile. High histamine. Oestrogen dominant. Dysbiotic. Inflamed.
People feeling fed up with not get anywhere with conventional treatment. Feeling like square pegs in round holes.
As well as people struggling with no clear diagnosis I also increasingly have clients seeking help with very serious medical diagnosis. In particular seeking oncology support to sustain a better quality of life or to try to improve clinical outcomes alongside allopathic treatments. This is an area I have highlighted to study further through a CPD programme and additional training.
Last but not least I offer value for money. Despite being one of the most experienced Medical Herbalists in Scotland I am also very competitively priced. That doesn't make me cheap, we simply have more scope to work within your realistic budget and add in extra supplements and protocols should you be able to afford them.
I have always strived to make my treatments affordable to as many as possible. Passionately believing that Herbal Medicine has always been the peoples medicine.
